Walking with the Wise #223: Unintended Consequences

“Whoever is greedy for unjust gain troubles his own household,

but he who hates bribes will live”—Proverbs 15:27

Christianity is intensely practical as the Word of God gives us instruction on how to live in relation to God, to one another, and to those around us. Nothing is overlooked by the Bible’s all-encompassing eye—family relationships and dynamics (husbands and wives, children and parents), how we work, how we play, spend money, how we eat, drink, and have sex. The Bible addresses everything. Today’s proverb shows us that if we are consumed with making money through illegal ways, then we will bring trouble on our own house. If, however, we stay away from bribes and refuse to pervert justice then we will be free from trouble or able to live unencumbered.

Are you making money unjustly? Is your greed leading you (and your family) to places of harm? Be assured, your greed doesn’t just affect you, but all of those around you. There may be unintended consequences that happen because of your choices, causing your family to be collateral damage. Don’t mess around. It’s not worth making money at the price of putting your family into harm’s way. Stay away from bribes, be fair in your financial pursuits, and don’t compromise your integrity for money that is destined to burn. If you are struggling and don’t think you can make it any other way, then I would ask you where your faith lies. Honor God and He will honor you and shall meet all of your needs according to the glorious riches provided for us in Christ Jesus (cf. Philippians 4:19). Trust in God, honor Him and He will help and provide for you. Amen.
