Walking with the Wise #254: What Right is Wrong

"There is a way that seems right to a man,
but its end is the way to death."

—Proverbs 16:25

Man is by nature darkened in his understanding, as Paul wrote,
“They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart”—Ephesians 4:18.
And because we are darkened, we are unaware of our spiritual need. It is not until we come to know Christ that we are truly able to see who He is, and make sense of this fallen world. But unredeemed man cannot comprehend new life in Christ, it seems foolish to him,
“For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, it pleased God through the folly of what we preach to save those who believe. For Jews demand signs and Greeks seek wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men”—1 Corinthians 1:21-25.
Man then pursues a god of his own creation, which may seem right to his darkened heart, but as the Proverb states, “its end is the way to death.” We must throw off any notion of following the gods of our own making—because there is only one God, there is no other. It is Him we follow and though everyone around us seeks to follow the darkened and lifeless gods of this world, we will follow the one true God and His Son, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Because it is through Him and in Him that we can forgiveness of sins, and life everlasting.

May our hearts have a singular focus on our Lord and Savior, and may we abandon any of the so-called gods of this world—whether they are the creation of our own hands or another, in favor of knowing and loving Him who He is, was, and is to come. Amen.
