Walking with the Wise #243: Angry Bosses

“A king's wrath is a messenger of death,

and a wise man will appease it.”
—Proverbs 16:14

Inevitably, we are going to encounter the wrath of someone who has authority over us. Prudence and experience dictate we think wisely in how we respond. If we respond quickly without thinking, we may respond angrily, snarky, with sarcasm, or in a spirit of self-defense—and losing our job in the process. Wisdom dictates tact and discernment, and even though our flesh might want to cry out or respond negatively, the Bible says that we are to give a quiet, confident response, for “a soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger”—Proverbs 15:1.

Are you prone to respond angrily when questioned or when experiencing the wrath of someone? Do you find yourself wanting to cut them down with a quick word or verbal jab? Or are you able to control yourself by giving a soft answer? Walk in the Spirit, and remember, if God’s Spirit is in you, then you have the ability to control yourself and your tongue (cf. Galatians 5:23). Let Jesus reign in your speech! Control your tongue, and respond wisely to the angry or wrathful boss above you. For in doing so, God will glorify Himself in you, and you will know that you responded in a way that is honoring to the Lord and beneficial to your life. Amen.
