Walking with the Wise #69: The Dread of the Damned
“What the wicked dreads will come upon him,
but the desire of the righteous will be granted.”
—Proverbs 10:24
but the desire of the righteous will be granted.”
—Proverbs 10:24
God has a way of always accomplishing His purposes. Man may try and shake his fist at God, reject Him and do everything in his power to thwart God’s purposes or plans, but it will come to nothing. It doesn’t matter what man tries to do; God’s purposes can’t be stopped. As the Psalmist wrote,
“Why do the nations rage
and the peoples plot in vain?
The kings of the earth set themselves,
and the rulers take counsel together,
against the LORD and against His Anointed, saying,
’Let us burst their bonds apart
and cast away their cords from us.’
He who sits in the heavens laughs;
the Lord holds them in derision.
Then He will speak to them in His wrath,
and terrify them in His fury, saying,
‘As for Me, I have set My King
on Zion, My holy hill’"
—Psalm 2:1-6.

What do the wicked dread? They dread getting caught in their sin and suffering the consequences thereof. They dread the fact that they will be judged for what they’ve done. And just like the devil, they try and rage against the judgment that’s coming. In a very pitiful and feeble attempt, they war against God by continuing in their sin, vainly and foolishly believing that somehow they are hurting God. But they are not. They are only hurting themselves.
God is sovereign and His ways are beyond understanding. He will judge the wicked and vindicate the righteous. He causes the wicked to be captured by the consequences of their sin, while He gives the righteous what they desire, which is, ultimately, Himself.
What about you, dear reader? Are you living a life for Christ? Or are you foolishly continuing in sin, vainly believing that God will not call you to account? Be warned—God is not mocked. He will judge the wicked and the righteous. The wicked will go into a Christless eternity, facing horrors beyond our imagination, while the righteous will inherit that which God has planned and purposed for those who love Him. Don’t continue in your sin; remember what Christ did for you! Repent and believe in the Gospel of Jesus Christ! God gave His Son for your sins, but you must surrender yourself to Him! Repent and believe, and you will be saved! Amen.
