Unchanging
"For I the LORD do not change; therefore you, O children of Jacob, are not consumed.”—Malachi 3:6
God doesn’t change. Ever. In any way. He is immutable, which is to say, He never changes. He has always been and will always be perfect. He will never change in His nature, attributes, or in His dealings with men. We change. All the time, we change. Technology has made us more used to change than we have ever been before. What is the newest model today, in just a few short months will be outdated. Fashions and trends fill the stores today only to be discounted and placed on the “clearance” rack to make room for the newest trend in just a few short months. We change and we age. Our ideas, life experiences, and philosophies change as we journey through life, but not so with God. He cannot be added to or taken away from. He is and will always be perfect, unchangeable in His nature and in His workings with men.
If God is unchangeable, then that means He cares not for fashion and trends. Sin will always be sin. What was sin yesterday, is still sin today. What God considers wicked will always be considered wicked, no matter what experts may say, or even what some so-called preachers may preach. We cannot project our ideas of what God should be like or how He should act. We cannot recreate God in our own image. The Word of God remains unchanged because God is its author and there is no “variation or shadow due to change”—James 1:17. He is the same “from all eternity” (Psalm 93:2), the “eternal King” (Jeremiah 10:10), “the immortal God” (Romans 1:23), “who alone is immortal” (1 Timothy 6:16). Or as the Psalmist wrote,
“They will perish, but You will remain;
they will all wear out like a garment.
You will change them like a robe, and they will pass away,
but You are the same, and Your years have no end”—Psalm 102:26-27.
God doesn’t change. His Son, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, doesn’t change either. He is “the same yesterday and today and forever”—Hebrews 13:8. What does this mean for us, His children? It means that we can take comfort in Him, knowing that He will bring His purposes to pass. It means that the wicked will be judged and the righteous will be vindicated. God will do everything that He has promised in His Word! He will never love us one minute and hate us the next. If He has lavished His love upon us in Christ and we have come to Him in repentance in faith, then He will never turn on us and cast us out. He will faithfully bring us to Himself and lead us in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake.
My brother or sister, cast your cares upon the Lord, knowing that He will bring to fruition everything He has promised. Know that He will not change. We can take refuge in His everlasting arms, knowing that He cares for us and will listen to us when we call. Amen.
