"Then I heard what seemed to be the voice of a great multitude, like the roar of many waters and like the sound of mighty peals of thunder, crying out, ‘Hallelujah! For the Lord our God the Almighty reigns.’” —Revelation 19:6

This past March, Carlos Slim Helu surpassed William Buffet and Bill Gates to become the wealthiest man in the world with an estimated net worth of approximately $53.5 billion. With money comes power, but no matter how much money Helu has, he is still a man. And no matter how much power he has, it is still limited.

God is not limited. He has all the power because He is God. George Frederic Handel was so amazed by God’s power that he took this passage of Scripture and used it in his Messiah in the famous “Hallelujah” chorus. It is no wonder then that each time the “Hallelujah” chorus is performed, the crowd stands in recognition of His great power and majesty.

If God is to be God, then He must have all power. If there were one single thing that God did not have power over, then His reign would break down at that point. God must have power, and as God He must have ALL power. Theologians call this God’s omnipotence, which means, “having all power.” There is nothing in the entire universe outside of His power and reign. Even the devil is not outside of God’s power. As Martin Luther said, “Even the devil is God’s devil.” Satan is limited in power, only able to do what God allows him to do. As the book of Job so clearly shows, Satan comes before God and is only allowed to do what God will allow him to do (see Job 1:6-12, 2:1-6).

As God has all power, then we know that nothing is beyond His ability to do or bring to pass. He is powerful enough “to rescue the godly from trials, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment until the day of judgment, and especially those who indulge in the lust of defiling passion and despise authority”—2 Peter 2:9. God will bring all that He has promised to fruition. Nothing can stop Him. There is no power that can thwart His plan or negate His promises. He will bring us safely to Himself, or, as Paul wrote, “And I am sure of this, that He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ”—Philippians 1:6. Amen.
