The Beginning & the End

“’I am the Alpha and the Omega,’ says the Lord God, ‘who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.’”—Revelation 1:8

The first letter of the Greek alphabet is an Alpha, which looks like our “A“ and the last letter is an Omega “Ω.” When Jesus said, “I am the Alpha and the Omega” He was showing His power and eternal nature. He is the beginning of all history, and the end for which all things were created. He existed before time began, living in blessed union with God the Father and God the Holy Spirit in an eternal love relationship. He came the first time as the suffering servant, humble, born of a virgin, living the life of a carpenter, became a teacher, healed the sick and raised the dead, was crucified, buried, rose again from the dead, and ascended into heaven where He sits at the right hand of God, waiting for the day when He will rule the world manifestly as the Sovereign Ruler of the Universe. We wait and long for that day when Christ will come again and all wrongs will be righted, injustice will be stopped, and the enemies of God will receive the punishment for their sins.

The book of Revelation, the book from which our verse for today comes, is a glimpse into the mind of God and the end of time. It is the “Revelation of Jesus Christ” (Revelation 1:1), which He made known to John, His beloved servant and apostle. He describes what will happen in the last days, but before He does, He describes Himself. He is the one who is existing and with God the Father as the Savior-elect. He is the one “who was,” that is, who existed before time began, and came to earth to save men from their sins. And He is to come as the Mighty ruling King, in His true glory. John describes Jesus’ glorious presence at the beginning of the book and at the end,

“…in the midst of the lampstands one like a son of man, clothed with a long robe and with a golden sash around His chest. The hairs of His head were white, like white wool, like snow. His eyes were like a flame of fire, His feet were like burnished bronze, refined in a furnace, and His voice was like the roar of many waters. In His right hand he held seven stars, from His mouth came a sharp two-edged sword, and His face was like the sun shining in full strength.”
—Revelation 1:13-16.

And then at the end,

“Then I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse! The one sitting on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he judges and makes war. His eyes are like a flame of fire, and on his head are many diadems, and he has a name written that no one knows but himself. He is clothed in a robe dipped in blood, and the name by which he is called is The Word of God. And the armies of heaven, arrayed in fine linen, white and pure, were following Him on white horses. From His mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations, and He will rule them with a rod of iron. He will tread the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God the Almighty. On His robe and on His thigh He has a name written, King of kings and Lord of lords.”—Revelation 19:11-16.

Jesus will come again, and it will be awesome! No longer will wickedness boast, no longer will injustice go on, no longer will evil reign—Jesus will wage war and all will bow, in heaven and on earth, prepared to give an account for the life that they lived.

My brother or sister, I pray that we all may be ready for that great and awesome day. I pray that we might all place our faith and trust in Christ. He came to seek and to save that which was lost (Luke 19:10), that is—us. We were the ones that He came to seek and to save, and He gave His life for our sins—both your sins and mine, so that we might have peace with God and spend eternity in His presence. Do you have this peace with God? He offers it to all who surrender the weapons of their self-righteousness and self-sufficiency and come humbly to the cross to trust in Him. Have you trusted in Him? It’s easy as repenting of your sins (which means to turn away from them) and believe, that is, trust in Christ for your salvation and He will save you. Do so today, don’t delay, but trust in Him! Amen.
