Walking with the Wise #478: God's Megaphone
“A whip for the horse, a bridle for the donkey,
and a rod for the back of fools.”
—Proverbs 26:3
—Proverbs 26:3
C.S. Lewis once wrote, “God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our conscience, but shouts in our pains; it is His megaphone to rouse a deaf world.”
God shouts to us in our pain because we are so deaf to everything else He does. We are rather dense creatures if you think about it. Hardhearted, hardheaded, deaf, blind, and dumb to the things of God, we can’t see the truth when it is not right in front of us. Just like a horse needs a whip to get its attention, the donkey needs a bridle to direct it, but fools only pay attention to pain. They refuse to listen to counsel or the wisdom of others, inevitably leading them down a road of further pain.
Rather than continuing on in foolish ways, we must wake up to the reality of His loving hand and all that He has for us in Christ. Maybe you are feeling the painful chastisement of God right now. If so, take heart! You are loved! Don’t despise His disciplining hand—instead submit to it, and be like Samuel who said, “Speak, for your servant hears”—1 Samuel 3:10. Let God speak to you. He wants to speak to you, direct you, and lead you in the way that is pleasing in His sight where He will receive glory and you will experience the joy of doing what He made you to be and do. Amen.
