Walking with the Wise #477: Over to God
“Like a fluttering sparrow or a darting swallow,
an undeserved curse will not land on its intended victim.”
—Proverbs 26:2 (NLT)
—Proverbs 26:2 (NLT)
God desires that we love our neighbor as ourselves. Wishing harm to fall on our neighbor when they have done nothing wrong is a disgrace. God will not have us trying to hurt someone who doesn’t deserve it. Even if they were our enemy, we still would not have any right to harm or curse them (cf. Romans 12:20). God will also make sure that the evil we desire will not fall upon them.
Wishing a curse upon an innocent neighbor is just like throwing a boomerang at them. God will see to it that it misses its mark and may well just come back and hit you. Consider the story of Heman and Mordecai in the book of Esther. Heman desired evil upon Mordecai (even though he had done nothing wrong), going so far as to have a gallows constructed in front of his house so that Mordecai could be hanged on it. But God would have none of it, and instead turned the tables on Heman and had him hung on the very gallows he had constructed.
Do you wish evil upon your neighbor? Coworker? Classmate? Family member? Friend? Don’t! Ask God to give you a heart to love and bless them. Give them to God, unload your burden and pain upon Him, then wait for Him to act. Amen.
