Ricola Reading
“Oh how I love Your law!It is my meditation all the day.”—Psalm 119:97
Being sick is no fun. Having a sore throat, being congested, and battling any type of sickness can take the fight out of anybody. During the past several weeks I have had a sore throat that seems to hold on no matter what I throw at it. It is scratchy and sore, making me constantly feel like there is a tickle in my throat. When my throat hurts, I reach for a Ricola cough drop. I have tried many different cough drops through the years, but none has worked as well as Ricola. Sucking on it throughout the day takes the pain away, enabling me to go about my day free and clear.
When our soul aches, we need to reach for the Word of God, the Bible. Many read the Word, but quickly forget what it says. They forget because they haven’t read properly. They need to practice, Ricola Reading, which is reading not simply to read, but to understand and have it seep into the core of their spiritual life. When our soul aches, we meditate upon the truths in the Bible so that they may permeate to the depths of our being. The Psalmist understood the need for Ricola Reading when he said, “Oh how I love Your law! It is my meditation all the day.” It wasn’t a chore for him to read and meditate upon Scripture; it was a great joy that overflowed in praise.
Today, let’s take the time to stop and suck on the truths of Scripture, letting them seep into the crevices of our spiritual life, and soothing our spiritual aches and pains. May the Scripture become such a part of our souls that we might echo the same praise of the Psalmist, “Oh how I love Your law! It is my meditation all the day.” Amen.
