The Harvest
“Do you not say, 'There are yet four months, then comes the harvest'? Look, I tell you, lift up your eyes, and see that the fields are white for harvest.”—John 4:35
Harvest. The harvest season is a wonderful time. The air begins to cool the leaves are falling, the sky turns a shifting shade of gray, and farmers in the fields are bringing in the harvest before winter comes. The fields of corn, once green and full of life, have turned a pale brown, almost white, as they are ready to give up their precious grain. Combines are tractors exclusively built for the harvest time that farmers use to bring in the harvest. They go back and forth through the fields, plucking valuable white stalks of corn from the earth, filling their storage basins with precious grain.
Watching the combines in the fields cutting down corn is a great picture of the church. As Jesus said concerning the Samaritan woman, “the fields are white for harvest.” The Samaritan woman was well acquainted with sin, having had five husbands and living with a man who was not her husband. Jesus was letting us know that in the cornfields of life, hidden in the husks of sin are saints waiting to be discovered.
Dear one, who in your life right now do you believe is too deep in sin to respond to the Gospel’s call? I can assure you, that if you believe a person is too far from the Gospel’s power, then the god whom you worship is not the God of the Bible, and the gospel you proclaim is not Christ’s Gospel. The God of the Bible is more powerful than you or I could imagine, able to save the very worst sinners. He delights in saving the prostituted, the adulterer, the felon, and the drug dealer. There is no sin beyond the Gospel’s power. Our Lord Jesus commands us to go to the harvest fields. We do not know who will respond to the Gospel’s call, but we do know that many will respond and it is very often those that seem to be the furthest away. There are men and women in the world just like the Samaritan woman, lost in sin, ready to respond to the Gospel. The fields are white for harvest, my friends, and God is greater than our fears and our apprehensions. We simply need to go and get them. Amen.
