Walking with the Wise #515: The Deepest Desire

“As a face is reflected in water,

so the heart reflects the real person.”
—Proverbs 27:19 (NLT)

The heart of a person is a deep place—containing within it disappointments, desires, and dreams. It is what truly shows who a person is. Looking into a pool of water is like looking into a mirror—enabling us to see who we are on the outside. Yet it is by looking at the heart that shows who we really are on the inside.

The Bible warns us to, “Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life”—Proverbs 4:23 (NLT). Be careful who you give your heart to and what you set your heart upon. Give it to men and things, and you will find yourself hurt and disappointed at one time or another. But give it to God entirely, making sure to keep nothing back, then He will give you the truest desire of your heart—Himself (Psalm 37:4). He is the deepest longing of our soul to which every earthly desire points, and He alone can fill it. By giving ourselves to Him, we find our true selves in the process. Amen.
