Walking with the Wise #114: Straight Speech

“The words of the wicked lie in wait for blood,

but the mouth of the upright delivers them.”
—Proverbs 12:6

The wicked will lie in order to get what they want, just like Herod lied to get the wise men to reveal where Jesus was born (cf. Matthew 2:8) so that he might have Him killed. Not so the righteous. The righteous have speech that is seasoned with salt, and filled with praises to God. The child of God seeks to tell the truth, so that whenever a time of accusation comes, they might be blameless.

Throughout life we will all be tempted, at one time or another, to speak ill of someone, to slander their character, and to make ourselves look better in the process, but for the child of God, we must learn to control our tongues, making sure that we are seeking the betterment of those around us, so that they too may praise God for who He is and what He has done.

What about your tongue? Are you glorifying God with your speech? Or are you seeking an opportunity to slander? Honor God with your tongue, refuse to slander those who hurt you, and be willing to endure injustice. Let God become your advocate and let Him be your defender. Because when God becomes our defender, He does what only He can do—glorify Himself in our lives, and show us to be faithful servants of Him. Amen.
