Walking with the Wise #36: GOD Hates Feet That Quickly Run To Evil

“There are six things that the LORD hates,

seven that are an abomination to Him:

haughty eyes, a lying tongue,
and hands that shed innocent blood,
a heart that devises wicked plans,
feet that make haste to run to evil…”
—Proverbs 6:16-18

We are to love what God loves and to hate what God hates. One of the things that God hates is feet that quickly run to evil. Sin can spring upon as at any moment. In the book of Genesis, sin is depicted as “crouching” at the door, ready to pounce on us (Genesis 4:7). Satan is given a similar description in the book of 1 Peter—as a lion that is prowling around looking for someone to devour (1 Peter 5:8). Since our hearts are deceitful and desperately sick (Jeremiah 17:9), from which flow our fallen desires (James 1:14-15; Matthew 19:4), we have to be on guard against sin and Satan. We all too quickly can run into sin without stopping to think about what we are doing, not realizing the horrific consequence that comes from our sinful choice. If we would stop and think for a moment, we would realize that God provides away out when temptation comes (1 Corinthians 10:13), we need only listen to the Spirit, remember God’s Word, and get out of the situation if necessary. God has provided the means for us to stop sinning by Jesus’ death on the cross. Jesus severed the chains of sin upon our souls and we no longer have to sin when temptation comes, we can say “no” to sin and “yes” to godliness, because we have the Spirit of Christ within us. And because of His death, resurrection, and ascension, we now have His Spirit and His Word to help guide and guard us from sinning against Him.

Are your feet quickly running to evil? Or are you guarding your heart making sure to keep yourself from sin? Thank God for loving you so much to die for you so that the power of sin may not chain your soul. Thank Him for giving His Spirit and His Word to teach, instruct, and lead you away from sin to living a life that is holy and honorable in His sight. Amen.
