When the Storm Comes

"Everyone who comes to Me and hears My words and does them, I will show you what he is like: he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built. But the one who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the stream broke against it, immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great."—Luke 6:47-49

The true measure of a person and what they build their life upon can be seen when the storms of life come. Jesus compares His words to a house built on a solid foundation. The storm comes, the waters rise, and the house is able to weather the storm, because it is built upon the rock. The ones who build their house on the rock are those who build their life upon Christ and His words. When we build our lives upon the Word of God then we can weather any storm that comes our way. It doesn’t matter how much water there is, or how strong the wind; the one who builds their life on Christ will survive—and thrive. But, most do not build their life upon the Word of God. They build their house on their own ideas, plans, experiences, dreams, thoughts and philosophies. They are those who build their home on the ground without a foundation. And while it may sound good and look safe, nice and comfortable, when calamity comes the true state of the building will be seen. It will collapse and be ruined, while those who build upon Christ will have safety, security and comfort.

What is your life built on? If it is built on any other foundation than that found within the Bible, it will not survive. But, if you have built your spiritual house on the Bible, which is Christ’s words, then you will survive any storm that comes your way. You may even be going through a storm right now, wondering whether the foundation will hold. Trust me, it will, as it has for thousands of others throughout the generations. The Word of God has endured through time despite efforts to eradicate it from the world, and it will continue to endure forever. As Jesus said, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away”—Matthew 24:35.

Since God’s Word is going to endure forever, and everything else will burn up or be destroyed, we must make sure to go to the Word of God to build our spiritual houses—it is the only true and solid foundation that will last. Amen.
