Hungry for God: The Words of His Mouth
“It is written,
‘Man shall not live by bread alone,
but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”
—Matthew 4:1-4

As we fast during Lent, we remember our Lord’s temptation in the wilderness. When confronted with His own hunger and Satan’s means which could alleviate it, Jesus said our verse for today. By saying that, He was simply repeating one of the great and glorious truths of Scripture. We are not our own. God made us. He is our Creator. He is the one whom, “formed my inward parts; You knitted me together in my mother's womb”—Psalm 139:13. It is God who made us. He reminds us of that fact when He said,
“Who has made man's mouth? Who makes him mute, or deaf, or seeing, or blind? Is it not I, the LORD?”—Exodus 4:11.God is the one who us made us, who fashioned us, who knew us before we were born (cf. Jeremiah 1:5). He is the one who gave us the ability to see, hear, feel, taste, touch, think, speak, and act. He is the one who gave us the ability to have and make wealth (cf. Deuteronomy 8:18). He is the one who has numbered the hairs upon our head (cf. Matthew 10:30). He is the one who enables the rain to come so that we might have food (cf. Acts 14:27). He is the one who controls the seasons and sets the world in its place, upholding the universe by the word of His power (cf. Hebrews 1:3). Fasting then is an active reminder for us that God is God and we are not.
Do you hunger for God? Do you recognize that He holds your life in His hand? Go to Him. Run to Him. Fall at His feet in humble repentance and ask Him to give you the faith to love and adore Him. Amen.
