You Were Made for This
“Oh come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the LORD, our Maker!”—Psalm 95:6
You were made to worship. That might seem trite, or foolish. But worship is the most serious business in the universe. There is no activity greater than worship. There is power in our praise. We all worship, whether we realize it or not. We worship what we value most. For some it is their ability, for others it is power, success, fame, fortune—you name it, and I guarantee that someone worships it. What is worship? Worship is giving the essence of who we are to something or to someone—worship is giving what we esteem most—the highest honor we can give.
In our text today, the Psalmist invites us to worship, bow down, and kneel—which are all words denoting submission, humility, and bestowing honor. We are to come humbly into His presence to worship Him. He is God. There is no one else. There are no other gods. He alone is the Creator and Sustainer of the universe. He is our Maker. He fashioned us. We did not create ourselves. We didn’t give ourselves the ability to think, feel, and love. God did that. And the faculties He gives us are to be used to reflect back to Him what He means to us.
God is our Maker, as our passage for today reminds us. He fashioned us and He did so for a purpose. And that purpose was so that we might give Him glory (Isaiah 43:7). We were made to worship. You were made to worship. Did you know that? God made you to reflect His glory—to reflect back to Him the radiance of His worth. And it is only when worshiping Him that we can truly experience the purpose for which we were made. We cannot feign worship, nor can we fool God, which is why Jesus said that the Father is looking for worshipers to worship Him in Spirit and in truth (John 4:24). God wants us to worship Him according to what He has revealed of Himself through His Word, and He wants us to worship Him in the purity and integrity of our hearts.
I think you will discover a blessedness in worship. If you haven’t, take the time to close your computer or put down your phone. Go to your room or a place where you will be undisturbed, get down on your knees and worship Him. He is our God—the only God. And by worshiping Him, He will communicate His presence to you, and as He does, you will know that you are fulfilling the purpose for which you were made. Amen.
