Better Reception

“…praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints.”—Ephesians 6:18

Cell phones. They are here to stay. I can’t imagine what life would be like if we didn’t have cell phones. And honestly, I have a hard time remembering what it was like before having one! One thing that everyone knows about cell phones is that you need to make sure you have good reception. There’s nothing more annoying than having a conversation dropped or going in and out because of poor reception. I have some friends who were having a hard time getting cell phone reception in their home, so in an effort to boost their cell phone reception, they purchased a cellphone booster and attached it to the top of their house. The antenna booster proved to be a powerful help and now they have crystal clear cell phone reception.

For the believer in Christ, we have a powerful way to communicate with God in prayer. But many of us don’t have good reception. In order for that to happen, we need a powerful booster, which is given to us through God’s Holy Spirit. How do we pray in the Spirit? By continually going up higher by having our spiritual antennas attuned to Him. Whenever we read the Word of God, listen to sermons, meditate upon the Word, fellowship with saints, and other spiritual disciplines, we are being filled with the Spirit of God. The more we do it, the more filled and attuned we are, the better we know how to pray. The secret of communion with God is to continually chase after Him. And the more we commune, the higher we go and the better reception there will be.

How is your reception? Are you attuned to God’s Spirit? Are you praying in the Spirit? Are you being filled with the Spirit by setting aside time to read His Word? Are you fellowshipping with God’s people? Are you listening to the Word being preached? Are you ordering and prioritizing your life to be in tune with Him? Prayer is a spiritual endeavor and only those who are spiritual can truly pray effectively.

May God enable us to pray in His Spirit, attuned to His work and will through His Word. May we converse with Him in order to know Him and to intercede for the saints. And may we do so time and time again, knowing that God will answer the requests we lay at His feet, not because of what we have done, but because of Jesus Christ and His intercession for us (Hebrews 7:25). Amen.
