Serve One Another
“For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.”—Galatians 5:13
The Christian life consists of who we are and what we do. Who we are refers to who we are in the inside—how we perceive God and how we perceive and conduct ourselves, which is determined by right belief. What we do refers to our actions—how we treat and interact with others, which is determined by right actions.
As believers it is essential that we have both—right belief and right actions. Without right belief, we may have right actions, but we have a social gospel devoid of the saving knowledge of who Christ is. If we have right belief without right action, the reality of who Jesus is cannot be seen in us and the validity of our right belief is brought into question.
As we go about our lives we must make sure that we cultivate both sides—right belief and right action. As we grow in the knowledge of who God is, we must make every effort to use our right belief to have right actions, which can be seen in our service others. Jesus Himself came to serve and give His life as a ransom for many (Matthew 20:28). Therefore, since we are His children it is imperative that we put our faith into practice and serve others. It is only by serving others that the love of Christ can truly be seen in us. Not to mention, a good dose of serving others helps cure our self-centeredness.
How is your serve? Are you serving others? Or do you shy away? Are you willing to sacrificially give of yourself to help others in need? Will you give them time? A listening ear? Or tangible help? Are you truly willing to serve? Our service demonstrates that we belong to the Savior—can others see Christ in your service? If not, why not? Use the freedom you have in Christ to serve others so that God might be glorified in you to the glory and honor of His magnificent and holy name. Amen.
