In Focus
“…let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith”—Hebrews 12:1-2
A few nights ago, my wife and I watched a National Geographic special on the Hubble telescope. The pictures from Hubble are absolutely fascinating—pictures of the galaxies far beyond what we have ever been able to see before. But it was almost a failed project. In 1990, when the telescope was launched into space, it was found to be out of focus. It was a minute miscalculation, about the width of a piece of paper, but it was off nonetheless. Critics cited it as a billion dollar blunder, and the project would have been all for naught until NASA sent a group of astronauts to correct the mistake in 1993. Once it was fixed, the photos that came from it proved to be absolutely breathtaking.
It’s amazing how the world looks when our life is out of focus. Whenever we fail to take time for the Lord or keep our eyes on Him, everything is distorted. But whenever we keep our eyes on Him rather than on our circumstances, then we are able to see the glories of God in all their wonder. We are able to see what God is doing in us, through us, and for us.
How is your focus right now? Are you focused on the Lord? Or are you like Peter when he walked on water and started to sink after shifting his eyes off the Lord and onto his circumstances? If so, then call out to Him, just like Peter did, and Jesus will reach out His hand to you. He cared for you enough to die for you, and if He is willing to die for you, then you can guarantee that He will never desert you. Amen.
