Walking with the Wise #294: Deep Water
“Wise words are like deep waters;
wisdom flows from the wise like a bubbling brook.”
wisdom flows from the wise like a bubbling brook.”
—Proverbs 18:4 (NLT)
Deep waters convey a sense of mystery, transcendence, and wonder. Their depths are not easily fathomed but much admired with a healthy fear and awe, needing to be pondered. A bubbling brook is a source of fresh water, refreshment, rejuvenation, and rest. Wise words act in a very similar way—giving us rest when we are weary, enabling us to regain perspective, and helping us to sojourn on in our journey with newfound strength.
God’s Word is both deep water and a bubbling brook. It gives life and health to our weary souls. It may cut—not to hurt, but to heal, like a surgeon’s scalpel. It cleanses the dirt from our soul, clears the fog from our eyes, and enables us to breathe the deeply life-giving oxygen of God’s peace and presence.
Are you feeling burdened? Are you feeling dirty? Do you feel like you are in a fog or haze? Run to God, drink deeply from His depths, and let the waters of His bubbling brook wash over you. Let His Word speak to your heart and surrender to the wonder of His life-giving love by doing what He desires and delights in. Amen.
