Unburdened

“Cast your burden on the LORD, and He will sustain you; He will never permit the righteous to be moved.”—Psalm 55:22

Feeling burdened? Whether it be trials, tribulations, sickness or sinfulness, we all have burdens that we carry. Like an overloaded parent in an airport, we drag our spiritual luggage with us wherever we go, waiting for the moment when we can unload it and breathe a fresh sigh of relief. People try to alleviate their burdens by indulging in all kinds of sin and shame, whether it be stuffing themselves with food, or drowning themselves with drink, worrying themselves in work, risking themselves in wrong relationships, losing themselves in lies, or escaping their cares in entertainment. We all seek to alleviate the backpack of burdens that weigh down our souls, but the only true way of alleviating these burdens is by dropping the backpack before Jesus Christ.

But how do we drop the backpack at His feet? When we try to find ourselves in the midst of despair, we have a tendency to feast on fear, rather than on faith. The only way that we can eradicate the hunger of hopelessness is through consuming Christ. Fill yourself up with faith by eating of His wonderful Word. Feast on faith. Gorge yourself on God’s grace. Eat of the truth of God’s Word and you will be satisfied with His sufficiency and the backpack of burdens will fall from your back, thus freeing your soul.

He is the only one who can take our burdens, and forgive the sins of our past that cling to us like Velcro. He is the one who gives hope to the hopeless, peace, forgiveness, and strength for today. He is the one who will sustain us when we are weak. He is the God of the impossible (Luke 1:37), the Great I AM (John 8:58), the author of our salvation (Hebrews 2:10), and the shepherd of our souls (John 10:14; 1 Peter 2:25). He is the one whom we cast our burdens upon. We do so in the knowledge that He will sustain us and establish us that we might continually glorify His great name even in our weakness, because when we are weak, then we are, by His grace, strong (2 Corinthians 12:10). Amen.
