Walking with the Wise #131: The Lord of our Lips

“A prudent man conceals knowledge,
but the heart of fools proclaims folly.”
—Proverbs 12:23

Prudence is the application of wisdom in a variety of life situations. A prudent man knows when to speak and when to listen. In life, there are times when we learn information that requires a great deal of discernment. Often times we find ourselves privy to all kinds of information, and as we interact with others, there will be the temptation to share information that is not beneficial, nor is it helpful.

When Jesus moves into our spiritual house, He begins transforming us. He works on our outward behaviors at first—swearing, lusting, stealing, cheating, etc. And then He starts making His way down into our heart—our pride, attitudes, motivation, values, etc. One of the most important areas that God wants to transform is also one of the most slippery and that is our speech. Words come easily and the more that we are with people, the more likely we will be tempted to spill information that is not for the ears of those around us. We must learn to know when to speak and when to be silent, and a prudent man knows both. It is the fool that is continually walking around spouting the actions, attitudes, sins, sicknesses, and sufferings of others.

Being the Lord of our life means also being the lord of our lips. The tongue can be the greatest tool of terror to men and women, and we must make sure that we do not participate in gossip, slander, deceit, lies, half-truths, false or misleading information, or inaccuracies. Our goal has been and will always be to speak the truth in love, so that our life may accurately reflect the presence of Christ in our life.

Are we being prudent or are we fools? If Jesus is the Lord of my life, can I honestly say that He is the Lord of my lips? When I hear information about others, do I automatically assume it’s true and share it with others—even if I pretend to share it as a prayer request? Or do I stop and consult the individuals involved so that I honor God? Honor God with all of our life, let Christ rule and reign in your conversation and be the prudent man or woman that God delights in. Amen.
