No Good Thing
“No good thing does He withhold from those who walk uprightly.”—Psalm 84:11b
God delights in giving His children good gifts. However, there are many competing thoughts concerning God’s interaction with His creation. Some harbor the thought of God as a divine police officer and judge—ready to bust us for our sin and then sentence us to an eternity in hell. But such a view fails to account for God’s grace made available to us in and through Christ. When we are walking with Christ, we are walking in grace and in integrity. The only time we need to fear the wrath of God is when we persistently and consciously continue in sin (see Hebrews 10:25-26). It is because of Christ that we can have God’s favor. We must learn to live in light of that fact. God delights in giving us good things; as Jesus said, “If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!”—Matthew 7:11.
God is passionately for us—He sent His Son to die for us and procure our salvation, He gave us His Spirit so that we might not be left alone, and so that we can know how to live rightly. And He has promised that He will answer us when we pray to Him.
Just like earthly parents delight in giving good gifts to their children, so does God delight in giving gifts to us. And just like an earthly parent, He gives us our good things at the right and proper time. He doesn’t give us everything we ask for, just like an earthly parent doesn’t give their child everything they want, but He does give us gifts that help increase our faith and our desire to glorify and enjoy Him.
May we look to the God of grace, not hesitating to ask Him whose ear is inclined to us because of Christ, believing in faith that He will not withhold any good gift from us for the glory, honor, and praise of His great and glorious name. Amen.
