Dancing to Doctrine: It's Alive!

“For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.”—Hebrews 4:12

From Genesis to Revelation the Bible is a living testimonial to God’s self-disclosure. Without divine Revelation (Scripture or the written word of God), we are lost, like ships adrift on the ocean, without purpose, direction, or a reason for living. The Bible is God’s way of inviting us to become participants in the life of God available in and through His Son.

The Bible is a book, but it is no ordinary book. It is a living book. We all know that letters make up words, words make up sentences, sentences make up paragraphs, and paragraphs make up stories. Together words, sentences, paragraphs, and stories come together to communicate meaning. “Meaning” is our way of understanding that which is important and applicable, something of value, worth, and esteem. All books try and convey some type of meaning, but not every book is able to elicit the response the author intended. That is, of course, unless it is the Bible. With God as the author, and the very words made eternally alive, Scripture is able to eternally communicate meaning to all who read or hear it—for blessing and salvation or for judgment and condemnation.

The Bible is alive. Other books, like classic works of literature, while they ably teach some type of truth or evoke some type of feeling or emotion—they pale in comparison to the vibrancy, poignancy, and power of the written word of God. The Bible, because of its living nature, cuts through every type of background in order to drive home God’s intended meaning.

God’s Word is living and active, cutting to the core of our existence, convicting us of our sin, revealing our need of a Savior, and showing us God’s desire for our lives. We must continually subject ourselves to the teaching of the word of God by reading, studying, and meditating on it. And at the same time, place ourselves under godly preaching—because it is through the preaching of the word that God gives faith (see Romans 10:17).

May we continually read God’s living word! May His name be continually upon our lips! May we see our Savior, in all His fullness, and what He has done on our behalf to secure our salvation and everlasting joy! Amen.
