Lies We Believe #7: One Sin Isn’t That Bad

“Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned.”—Romans 5:12

Sin is serious, deathly serious. There are some who believe that one sin is not that bad in the sight of God, but that reveals a misunderstanding of what sin is and what it means in the sight of God. Our passage today shows how sin entered into the world—it entered through one man. But how did it enter into the world? It entered not through murder, theft, adultery, stealing, violence, or anything like that. How then did it enter in? Through one seemingly small act of disobedience. And what was that act of disobedience? Eating a fruit. Sin entered into the world by a woman and a man eating fruit. It wasn’t homicide, kidnapping, slander, or theft—it was eating from a fruit. And why was eating the fruit bad? Because God had commanded them not to. And when they did, it brought about the Fall of humanity: sin, sickness, and death were ushered into the world through them, and we are continually suffering the consequences of their own choice.

Sin is serious in the sight of God because sin is an affront to the moral standards of God, an offense to His holy nature. King David understood this when he said, “Against You, You only, have I sinned and done what is evil in Your sight”—Psalm 51:4. It’s not that David didn’t think his sin affected other people; it’s that He understood that sin is ultimately an affront to a holy God.

Sin is serious in the sight of God—so serious, in fact, that one sin resulted in the eventual physical death of all humanity. And while there are different consequences to different sins, all acts of disobedience in the sight of God merit death and destruction because of the rebellion that each sin constitutes against God. It was not done against a friend, local official, or boss, but against God Himself, and to sin against God requires a response from God in proportion to who He is.

Even one sin merits God’s judgment, and if one sin brought about the fall of all men, what will happen to those who continually indulge in all kinds of sins? Will they not be judged severely for sinning against God? Most definitely, all men will be judged, and when that day comes, those who have sinned great or small in the sight of God will be judged, and it is only those who have trusted in Christ’s death who will escape.

May God continually remind us what our sin required and may we continually bask in the knowledge that He loves us and wants what is best for us—more of Himself. Amen.
