Lies We Believe #16: Hasn’t Science Proven…?

“See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ.”—Colossians 2:8

There is the belief today that science and Christianity are incompatible with one another. There are continually news articles, blogs, websites, and books coming out that attempt to discount or debunk Christianity for one reason or another, usually coming at times of Christian holy days (i.e. Christmas and Easter), leading many believers to question whether or not Christ or Christianity is true. This may take the tack of revisionist history or some progressive advance of science that somehow proves that the Bible is wrong about certain things and if the Bible is in error, then it must be wrong about Christ Himself.

This is one of Satan’s most subtle lies and one that consistently gets used by numerous magazines, periodicals, and in freshman college classes. However, no sooner as the credits of some documentary are rolling, or the ink has dried on the magazine, or the book signing party is over, the pseudo-theory meant to expose Christianity is debunked itself. History is littered with the books and lives of those who sought to discredit, malign, misrepresent, or totally smear the Christian faith. The most pointed attack is not usually toward Christ, but His followers. And while the true believer must acknowledge that God’s church hasn’t always been faithful to the teachings of her Lord, that doesn’t mean that the Lord of the church isn’t who He said He was. We have been guilty of some horrendous things throughout time, but simply because the church has failed doesn’t mean her Christ has.

Christianity is true and many seek to disprove or erase Christianity from the history books. The most often pointed attack toward Christianity is faith itself. How can we know? What do we know for sure? Science seeks to shore up what faith lacks by providing the means and structure by which things can be measured, but faith cannot be measured. And science, at its root, can’t be truly measured either. Both come back to faith. Science can only prove what can be seen and measured and since Christ is not manifestly present on the earth any longer, then He cannot be measured, thus eluding science’s all-invasive grasp. Yet, science itself can only see to the horizon of the truly measurable and there still remains an element far beyond its sight, therefore it must rely heavily upon the newest theory or hypothesis and exercise its own faith in what can be known and measured upon this earth. Science, true science that simply does measure what can be known does not hinder the Christian faith, but rather supports and compliments it. It is the science that has been loosed from the dock of surety and certainty that finds itself adrift on the sea of speculation that is dangerous to all passengers aboard its doomed voyage. So, then, even the most ardent scientists, after scaling the mountains of observable data available to us of mortal flesh, find themselves not as the pioneers of knowledge, rather as latecomers to the summits already settled by philosophers and theologians.

No matter what advancement of man may come, the glory of God will continue. As C.S. Lewis said, “Man can no more diminish God's glory by refusing to worship Him than a lunatic can put out the sun by scribbling the word, 'darkness' on the walls of his cell."

We can attempt to discredit or debunk the name of Christ, but would soon discover our act would accomplish about as much as trying to empty the ocean with a thimble. It’s a futile and impossible act. We must trust in Him who has chosen to reveal Himself to us by sending His Son to love us and save us from our sins. Within Him all of the mysteries of the universe are answered and we, by our faith in Him, are beneficiaries of the greatest act of love the universe has ever known—Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross. He is God and there is no other and any attempt by science or philosophy that seeks to devalue or dethrone the King of Kings is demonic and a lie. We must expose it and rest in the knowledge of Him who is true—our Savior and God, Jesus Christ. Amen.
