Walking Humbly
“He has told you, O man, what is good;
and what does the LORD require of you
but to do justice, and to love kindness,
and to walk humbly with your God?”
and what does the LORD require of you
but to do justice, and to love kindness,
and to walk humbly with your God?”
—Micah 6:8
Have you ever asked yourself the question, “What does God want from me?” We all have, at some time or another, wanted to know what God wants from us. And while He may or may not reveal specifically what He has for you, we know for sure what He wants from every believer in every age: to do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with God. As believers in Christ, we are to stand for justice and what is right, despite what the world says or how it might respond. In Scripture, this means taking a stand for the oppressed (Daniel 4:27), widows (James 1:27), the orphan (James 1:27), and the alien among us (Exodus 23:9). We are to seek justice for those who aren’t able to help themselves or don’t know how. We also are to be kind, which means we are of a friendly disposition that sincerely cares for another person and is willing to help him or her, despite the personal cost or inconvenience (Luke 10:25-37).
Micah’s words are a small insight into what it means to love God and love people. In doing justice and being kind, we love our neighbors as we love ourselves. He wants us to help and seek the betterment of others while maintaining a close and intimate walk with God. “Walking” in Scripture is a metaphor for how one lives or conducts his or her life, so to “walk humbly” means to live in a dependent and an intimate way with the Lord, aware of God’s holiness and our brokenness.
God isn’t asking us to be famous, to make millions, or have the biggest and nicest homes. He wants us to love Him and have a heart that is set upon seeking and walking with Him. We show our love for God by loving others and standing for them when times are tough.
How is your walk with God? Are you walking humbly with Him? Are you cultivating your relationship with Him by reading His Word and praying to Him? And what about others? Who can you help today? God wants your heart, and He wants to transform your heart so you can be a blessing to others. Look for someone who needs your help today and be a blessing to them. Amen.
